A worldwide United Nations forum aimed at connecting industry, individuals, activists, and governments will be released as a mobile app.

The U.N. wants to make it easier for people to work together on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals that were adopted by U.N. member states last year. The project, called SDGs In Action was announced at the 2016 Social Good Summit and includes participation by Groupe Spécial Mobile or GSMA, the U.N., and Project Everyone.

The Sustainable Development Goals, include 17 benchmarks that are outlined in one part of the app focusing on a variety of issues from zero poverty, zero hunger, quality education, clean water and sanitation, and affordable clean energy, to sustainable cities, responsible consumption, decent work and economic goals, and partnerships across the globe to achieve these goals. The goals were officially enacted at the beginning of this year by the United Nations.

“The agenda set forth by the Sustainable Development Goals is far-reaching and ambitious, from ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all, to achieving gender equality, to making cities and settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, to helping to combat climate change and its impacts,” said Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is in place with the purpose to achieving the goals in the next 14 years, based on a roadmap that includes the participation and cooperation of not just governments and industry, but also anyone who connects with the SDGs In Action app. The app also includes videos, animations, and platforms for dialogue about how to achieve each of the goals like networking events and news regarding different aspects of sustainable development around the world.

Under-Secretary-General David Nabarro said, “This includes a broad range of efforts in support of the SDGs — from inviting leading companies to join hands and support initiatives on women and children’s health, disaster relief, data collection and analysis, to aligning industry-wide sustainability business practices with the Goals.”

The new app is an exciting step for the United Nations in implementing the ambitious and much needed Sustainable Development Goals.
