Life Expectancy for Africans Increases Dramatically Over Last 15 Years

A recent report issued by The World Health Organization (WHO) has found that life expectancy for most Africans has dramatically increased by 9.4 years over the past fifteen years. The average life expectancy in Africa is now 60 years.

This comes as a result of most African nations having overcome the disaster of the AIDS epidemic that swept the continent during the 1990’s. The longer life expectancies are also attributed to increases in both malaria control and the prevention of infant deaths.

The WHO report, which was released last week, noted that life expectancy throughout the world, in general, has been extended upwards since 2000. In fact, it confirmed the fastest rise in lifespans since the 1960s with a total of 5 years added between 2000 and 2015.

Global life expectancy for children born in 2015 was 71.4 years (73.8 years for females and 69.1 years for males). With an average lifespan of 86.8 years, women in Japan can expect to live the longest. Switzerland enjoys the longest average survival for men, at 81.3 years. People in Sierra Leone have the world’s lowest life-expectancy for both sexes: 50.8 years for women and 49.3 years for men.

The WHO report was based on the study of 194 countries. Many factors were taken into account when compiling the data such as life expectancy, health indicators, mortality rates, sickness and death from a variety of diseases, behavioral risks, and financial investment in health care.

“The world has made great strides in reducing the needless suffering and premature deaths that arise from preventable and treatable diseases,” said Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO.

“But the gains have been uneven. Supporting countries to move towards universal health coverage based on strong primary care is the best thing we can do to make sure no-one is left behind,” she concluded.
