James Cameron Surprises Fans With Four Sequels to Avatar Instead of Three

Film director James Cameron announced that he will be making four sequels to his 2009 blockbuster film “Avatar” with the first one being launched as early as 2018.

“I’ve been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters to design the world of Avatar going forward,” Cameron said at CinemaCon, where he appeared as a surprise guest yesterday. “So far, the art I’m seeing is, in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film. It’s going to be a true epic saga.”

Cameron had initially envisioned only three sequels, but later felt that four would bring the epic fantasy to a proper conclusion. The first of the sequels, “Avatar 2,” will appear during the Christmas season of 2018 with the remaining three hitting theaters in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

“Avatar” had taken the number one spot of all time at the domestic box office soon after its release grossing $760.5 million, but fell to second place after “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” came in at $760.6 million earlier this year. Worldwide, “Avatar” did $2.8 billion and remains the highest grossing movie of all time.

Cameron further declared that these sequels, like most Hollywood blockbusters, should be seen on the big screens at movie theaters. “Trust me,” said Cameron. “These are films that were designed to be seen in theaters and on the big screen first. I think it’s absolutely essential for movies to be offered exclusively in theaters on their initial release. ”

Finally, Cameron explained that each picture will be whole and unto itself which, he believes, will add to the allure of the five film epic. ”We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga.”
