Bill Gates Predicts Global Warming Breakthrough in 15 Years

Bill Gates has predicted that a breakthrough in the battle against global warming will come sometime in the next 15 years.

In annual open letter, Bill and Melinda Gates, the billionaire philanthropists, have laid out the issues they would most like to focus on this year. For Bill that issue is energy and its relation to climate change. For Melinda it is improving the lives of women around the world.

Bill’s focus on climate change comes as no surprise, the tech entrepreneur has spent years advocating for clean energy and working with start up companies to develop ways to battle global warming. Last year in fact, Gates pledged to invest over $1 billion of his own money in clean energy technology.

This year, the couple’s annual letter was written directly for high school students, saying, “You’re the ones who will ultimately be solving these problems.”

“The truth is, the people who will be hit the hardest [by climate change] are the world’s poorest. Millions of the poorest families work as farmers. Changes in weather often mean that their crops won’t grow because of too little rain or too much rain,” Bill writes in his portion of the letter. “That sinks them deeper into poverty. That’s particularly unfair because they’re the least responsible for emitting CO2, which is causing the problem in the first place.”

Gates notes that scientists have predicted that to curb the effects of global warming, the world must cut at least 80 percent of its greenhouse emissions by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

He continues to break down the necessity of creating and utilizing energy sources that don’t emit carbon. “In short, we need an energy miracle,” he says. And to make a miracle scientists and researchers need to try and fail and keep trying. “Each dead end will teach us something useful and keep us moving forward,” he writes.

“The challenge we face is big, perhaps bigger than many people imagine. But so is the opportunity,” Gates says. “If the world can find a source of cheap, clean energy, it will do more than halt climate change. It will transform the lives of millions of the poorest families… Within the next 15 years — and especially if young people get involved — I expect the world will discover a clean energy breakthrough that will save our planet and power our world.”

Gate’s optimism and desire to be apart of the long and challenging path toward a carbon-zero energy solution is an inspiring call to action for high school students — and scientists, researchers, and governments — around the world.
